What Skincare Ingredients Should Never Be Mixed (and What to Use Instead)

Let’s be real—some skincare combos are just bad news and there are skincare ingredients to avoid mixing. Like margaritas and group chats. Or jeans and humidity. Certain ingredients, even the ones that work wonders alone, can actually cancel each other out or leave your skin irritated when mixed.

So before you layer up, here’s your no-BS guide to the skincare combos to avoid—and what to do instead.


🚫 1. Retinol + Vitamin C

Both are anti-aging icons—but together? Chaos. They work best at different pH levels and times of day. Use Vitamin C in the morning to protect your skin, and Retinol at night to repair.

Do this instead:

🚫 2. AHAs/BHAs + Retinol

Both exfoliate—combine them and you risk irritation, redness, and a compromised skin barrier. You’re not peeling an orange here, you’re caring for your face.

Do this instead:
Alternate nights (i.e. Glycolic Monday, Retinol Tuesday)
Or use AHAs/BHAs in the morning and retinol at night

🚫 3. Benzoyl Peroxide + Retinol

These two cancel each other out chemically—and together, they’re super drying. If you’re breakout-prone, don’t panic.

Do this instead:
AM: Benzoyl peroxide
PM: Retinol
Always moisturize and protect your barrier

🚫 4. High-Dose Niacinamide + Vitamin C

Low doses can be fine, but layering them separately can cause flushing and sensitivity for some. It’s not “dangerous” per se—but why risk it?

Do this instead:
Use a serum that combines them in a stable formula—or apply them at different times of day.


🚫 5. Too Many Actives Without Moisture

If your routine looks like a chem lab, and you’re not using a hydrating serum and moisturizer, you’re going to end up with dry, angry skin.

Do this instead:
